George Lopez Honored With Wax Figure

Comedian George Lopez was honored with a wax figure at Madame Tussauds on Thursday, April 1, 2010 on Hollywood Boulevard, becoming the first Mexican-American selected for the honor. We had heard that the star of TBS' "Lopez Tonight" was a nice guy and Lopez certainly lived up to this billing.

We arrived at the ceremony a few minutes after the 11:00 am scheduled time and found George Lopez on stage with his wax likeness. The crowd was huge and cheering enthusiastically. We decided that even though there was a good chance that Lopez would sign for the crowds (which he did), that we preferred to try and catch him as he left from a back door. There were only the two of us, a mom and her two sons and another guy waiting for Lopez at the back entrance. A few other passerbys stopped when Lopez finally did come out later on. There were five or six security guards on walkie talkies at any given moment gleaming at us intently, which was unecessary and definitely overboard. After 45 minutes or so, the garage door lifted and we spotted Lopez making his way out of the building. The security guards had directed us to staqnd back on the sidewalk by the street, probably 40 or 50 more feet further back than we really preferred. They also pulled George's SUV all the way back into the driveway, up to the door, so if he really wanted to jump in his vehicle and ignore us, he could have. We called out to George, asking if he could please sign and sure enough, he did. Walking past his vehicle, Lopez greeted us and already had a black sharpie in hand. He signed my 8x10 photo and he even paused, expecting me to flip another photo for him. He kept signing item after item, making his way around the collectors. We had 13 photographs and George signed them all for us. He even commented and liked a shot we had of him doing stand-up comedy. Lopez then took the time to pose for photographs with those who asked. Lopez spent a good five minutes and was quite generous with his time. Eventually, one of the security guards said that it was time for George Lopez to go and we know he was most likely heading to a taping of his popular talk show. Thanks George for being such a good guy!
